Michele & Daniel

Our story begins in the fall of 1989, when Daniel moved to Yorktown and joined Michele’s third-grade class. The teacher had everyone make welcome cards for the new student, and Michele’s let him know he’d be sitting in her group. We were friends first — and by 8th grade we were dating. Daniel became Michele’s first boyfriend and first kiss.

When we got to high school, Daniel’s cousin Vanessa transferred to our school. He told Michele they had to be friends. He was right. Vanessa became one of Michele’s closest friends — and, as it turns out, she would play a much bigger role in this story than any of us realized at the time.

Like a lot of high school relationships, ours eventually ended. We stayed friends, stayed in the same circle, graduated, and went our separate ways. The last time we saw each other was a dinner when Michele was living in Florida and Daniel happened to be there for work. We said goodbye and went our separate ways. Neither of us knew it would be nearly twenty years before we’d see each other again.

The summer of 2025 is where fate quietly stepped in.

Michele’s friend Jess forgot to throw her bouquet at her wedding. The next day, standing in her driveway with only Michele there, she threw it anyway. Michele caught it and laughed. Neither of us had any idea how fitting that would turn out to be.

Around the same time, Vanessa’s son Diego was getting married — and Vanessa made sure to mention that Daniel would be there, along with a cheeky comment about rekindling an old flame. Michele’s response was simple: “Ew, Vanessa, no.” Over the next couple of weeks, Vanessa kept making little comments. Michele kept saying absolutely not.

The Wednesday before the wedding, Daniel went to a concert and partook in some mind-altering activities. During what he refers to as his “vision quest,” he found himself back in 8th grade, dancing with Michele at the school dance — a memory that hadn’t crossed his mind in years. At the time, he just thought it was a weird thing to pop up. In hindsight, it was a little more than that.

Daniel had no idea Michele would be at the wedding. When he sat down behind her and she turned around and smiled — “Hi, Daniel” — the look on his face told the whole story. We spent the rest of the night talking, laughing, catching up, and dancing, while Vanessa and her husband PJ somehow kept us in the same orbit all evening. By the end of the night, Michele had saved her number in Daniel’s phone as “Michele, The Best Ex-Girlfriend Ever.”

A few weeks later, Vanessa invited Michele to a family barbecue — and made sure Daniel would be there too. After the wedding and the barbecue, Daniel started to feel like the coincidences were trying to tell him something. He texted Michele and asked her to dinner.

Whatever it was, they stayed until the restaurant closed — four hours later — and both knew they’d had a really great time. For the next several months they talked every day, went to dinner, took a painting class, and got to know each other all over again. Michele was still insisting they were just friends.

Then came the playlist. And it changed everything.

When a 90s concert they’d planned to attend got canceled, Michele made Daniel a playlist for their movie night instead. What started as a thoughtful gesture turned into something she couldn’t ignore — the kind of playlist where you order a mixtape sticker and write every song by hand, and somewhere in the middle of making it, you realize this might not be friendship anymore.

That night, Michele told Daniel it felt like there was something they were both avoiding talking about.

He looked her straight in the eyes and said, “Only one of us is avoiding talking about it, Michele.”

What followed was an honest conversation about what they both wanted. By the end of the night, they agreed to see where things might go.

A few days later, what was supposed to be a quick lunch turned into nine hours on the couch talking about everything. It was during that conversation that Michele explained she approaches relationships the way she approaches a swimming pool — she dips a toe in first, takes her time, and gets comfortable before she gets in. Daniel, on the other hand, cannonballs straight into the deep end. Michele told him it was fine that he cannonballed in — but he was going to have to swim back and get her.

It was also that day that Daniel admitted he had known after their first date — or not-a-date, depending on who you ask — that he was going to marry her.

By the end of that afternoon, they officially started dating. That same day, Michele met Daniel’s kids, Ava and Jackson, who were excited to see their dad happy — and thankfully seemed to like Michele too.

Remember the cannonball.

While Michele was still getting comfortable with the idea of dating her high school boyfriend again, Daniel was already looking much further ahead. When the conversation turned to proposals, Michele had two requests: her hair had to look nice, and absolutely no public proposal. She figured that information would come in handy a year or so down the road.

Daniel apparently had other plans. A few weeks later, with Ava and Jackson helping him every step of the way, he started planning.

Then came the family trip to Universal Studios. On the first day, walking into Islands of Adventure, they stopped in front of a sign that read “The Adventure Begins.” After a few photos, Daniel smiled and said, “You know what’s about to happen now.”

Michele definitely did not. A few seconds later, he was down on one knee.

She looked up, rolled her eyes, smiled, and said, “I can’t believe you’re doing this right now.”

Then she said yes.
